Quick and Healthy Mocha Oatmeal

Author: Erin Dooner

Serves: 1 (easily scalable for more)

Ingredients

  • 1 serving of your favorite kind of oats, cooked
  • 1 banana (ripe for natural sweetness)
  • 1/4-1/3 cup frozen or fresh strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (unsweetened, adjust amount based on banana sweetness preference)
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules (or espresso powder for a stronger kick)
  • A small splash of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons or more of your favorite milk (almond milk is a great choice)

Instructions

  1. For efficiency, consider cooking a larger batch of oats ahead of time. Steel-cut oats, while incredibly nutritious, can take longer to cook than rolled oats. Preparing a big pot and refrigerating it ensures you have ready-to-go oats for several mornings. If cooking fresh, aim for about 1/4 cup of dry steel-cut oats or one serving of old-fashioned rolled oats. Use whatever type of oats you enjoy most.
  2. Begin by mashing the banana thoroughly in your serving bowl. You might want to reserve a few thin slices of banana to garnish the top later – it adds a lovely visual touch. Once mashed, add the cocoa powder, instant coffee, vanilla extract, and your chosen milk to the banana. Mix these ingredients together until well combined, forming a smooth, aromatic mocha base.
  3. Now, incorporate your cooked oatmeal into the banana-mocha mixture. If your oatmeal is freshly cooked and hot, simply stir it in. If you’re using refrigerated cold oatmeal, you can gently warm the entire mixture in a small pot on the stove for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally, or heat it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes until it reaches your desired temperature.
  4. Serve your delicious mocha oatmeal topped with fresh or frozen strawberries. Frozen strawberries create a wonderful contrast with warm oatmeal, slowly thawing and releasing their juicy flavor. Enjoy your quick, healthy, and incredibly flavorful breakfast!

The Power of a Wholesome Breakfast: Why This Mocha Oatmeal Stands Out

This mocha oatmeal isn’t just tasty; it’s packed with benefits that will kickstart your day right. Oats are a nutritional powerhouse, offering complex carbohydrates that provide sustained energy release, keeping you full and focused until your next meal. They are also an excellent source of soluble fiber, which is crucial for digestive health and can help regulate blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol.

The star ingredients beyond oats contribute significantly to its health profile. Bananas provide natural sweetness, eliminating the need for added sugars, and are rich in potassium, essential for heart health and muscle function. Cocoa powder, especially unsweetened varieties, is loaded with antioxidants, which combat free radicals in the body and can even boost your mood. Instant coffee, beyond its delightful flavor, offers a mild caffeine lift, enhancing alertness without the jitters associated with stronger brews. Fresh or frozen strawberries add a burst of Vitamin C and additional antioxidants, making this bowl a true superfood blend. By using almond milk, or any plant-based milk, you also keep this recipe dairy-free and suitable for various dietary preferences, while adding a creamy texture.

Tips for Perfection and Creative Variations

  • Adjust Sweetness: The ripeness of your banana plays a big role in the overall sweetness. If your banana isn’t very ripe, you might want to add a tiny drizzle of maple syrup or honey to taste, although often the natural sweetness is enough.
  • Oat Varieties: While steel-cut oats offer a chewier texture and higher fiber, old-fashioned rolled oats or even quick oats can be used for a faster preparation. Adjust cooking times according to package directions.
  • Topping Ideas: Beyond strawberries, consider a sprinkle of chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts) for healthy fats and crunch, chia seeds or flax seeds for extra fiber, or a few dark chocolate chips for an indulgent touch. A dusting of cinnamon can also complement the mocha flavor beautifully.
  • Spice it Up: A pinch of cayenne pepper can add a subtle warmth and depth, creating a “Mexican mocha” vibe.
  • Make it Your Own: Don’t be afraid to experiment with other berries like raspberries or blueberries, or even a spoonful of nut butter for added protein and richness.

Beyond the Recipe: A Nod to Community & Creativity

Now, shifting gears from delightful breakfasts to exciting community news! I was recently honored with the Versatile Blogger Award by the wonderful Lauren over at Peanut Butter and Ginger. Receiving this award is incredibly exciting and truly humbling. Thank you so much, Lauren, for this thoughtful recognition! • Reach out to each blogger you nominate to let them know they’ve been awarded.
  • Inform the person who awarded you that you’ve accepted and shared it!

So, without further ado, here are 7 (plus one bonus!) random facts about me:

  1. I’m an Only Child: Growing up without siblings meant a lot of solo playtime and a strong sense of independence. This might be part of why I cherish my in-laws so deeply; my husband comes from a family of five, and embracing that dynamic has been a joy. It’s wonderful to experience the vibrant energy and close bonds of a larger family.
  2. Pickle Preferences: I have a quirky dislike for regular pickles. Please, pickle lovers, don’t hold it against me! Interestingly, I adore almost anything else pickled – beets, carrots, those tiny white onions, you name it. But when it comes to the standard cucumber pickle, I just can’t get on board.
  3. A Lifetime of Long Hair: My hair has almost always been long. I did attempt to cut it shorter a couple of times while pregnant with my daughter, but even then, it was long enough to pull back into a ponytail. I’ve come to truly love my long, sometimes curly and wild, hair. I don’t plan on cutting it short ever again; it feels like a part of my identity.
  4. Embracing My Height: I’m not quite 5’2″ tall. While I sometimes get teased for my shortness, it’s actually something I’ve grown to love about myself. I have no desire to be taller; I’ve learned to appreciate the unique perspective and advantages that come with being petite.
  5. My Math Nemesis: Math and I have never seen eye to eye. It’s just not a subject that clicks for me, no matter how hard I try. My brain seems to operate on a different frequency when it comes to numbers and equations. Give me a creative project or a recipe, and I’m in my element, but complex calculations remain a mystery.
  6. A Love Affair with Rain: There’s something incredibly comforting and cozy about being indoors on a truly rainy day. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in Vancouver, which is renowned for its generous rainfall – some even call it the rain capital of Canada! The sound of rain on the roof, the fresh scent it brings, and the excuse to curl up with a hot drink are all things I deeply appreciate.
  7. Allergy-Free Living: I am incredibly fortunate to have no known allergies. I can’t recall a single instance where something has made me sneeze, itch, or break out in a rash. This freedom to enjoy all sorts of foods and environments without worry is a privilege I truly appreciate.
  8. A Journey from Shyness: I’m adding an eighth fact because coming up with just seven was surprisingly challenging! I used to be incredibly shy. While I’ve made strides to overcome it, putting myself out there or sharing personal facts still feels a bit like stepping out of my comfort zone. It’s a continuous journey of growth!

Now, regarding passing on this wonderful award… many of the bloggers I admire and would typically nominate have already received it!
