If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for a quick, healthy, and incredibly tasty dinner solution. And that’s precisely what this air fryer sesame chicken delivers! It has quickly become a staple in my kitchen, a testament to its irresistible flavor and unmatched convenience. The magic of the air fryer transforms humble chicken pieces into perfectly crispy, tender bites, coated in a luscious, savory-sweet sesame sauce that will have everyone asking for seconds.

Why Choose the Air Fryer for Sesame Chicken?
While you certainly can pan-fry this sesame chicken (and I’ll share tips for that below!), the air fryer truly elevates this recipe. An air fryer circulates hot air around your food, mimicking the effects of deep-frying with significantly less oil. This means you get that desirable crispy exterior on your chicken without the mess, added calories, or extended cooking time typically associated with traditional frying methods. It’s a game-changer for achieving that golden-brown, satisfying crunch that makes sesame chicken so enjoyable.
For those without an air fryer, don’t despair! You can still enjoy this fantastic recipe. Simply fry the chicken pieces in a pan with a bit of oil until they are thoroughly cooked and beautifully golden. To ensure faster and more even cooking when pan-frying, I highly recommend cutting your chicken into thinner, more uniform pieces. This helps prevent some pieces from being undercooked while others are overdone.
I genuinely cannot express enough how much I adore this air fryer sesame chicken. I first developed this recipe just a couple of weeks ago, and since then, it has graced my dinner table no less than five times! Its quick preparation and incredible flavor make it an absolute winner in our household. It’s the kind of dish you crave and can easily whip up even on the busiest of evenings.
I typically serve this delightful sesame chicken alongside a steaming bowl of fragrant jasmine rice. The simplicity of the rice perfectly complements the rich flavors of the chicken. However, if you’re looking for other great options, Instant, Single-Serving Brown Rice is a fantastic whole-grain alternative. For a lower-carb or paleo-friendly meal, cauliflower rice is an excellent choice. You can learn How To Make Cauliflower Rice easily!
Crafting the Perfect Sesame Chicken Sauce
The sauce is undeniably the heart and soul of any sesame chicken recipe, and this one truly stands out. I’ll admit, I’m often wary of soy-based sauces; they can sometimes be overly sweet or lack a balanced depth of flavor. A notable exception I’ve always loved are these Sesame Noodles. But with this air fryer sesame chicken, I’ve created a sauce that strikes the ideal balance. It offers a delightful hint of sweetness without being cloying, while the toasted sesame oil and sesame seeds infuse it with an incredible nutty aroma and complex flavor profile that will tantalize your taste buds. It’s rich, glossy, and perfectly coats every piece of crispy chicken.

The Crucial Role of Oil for Crispy Chicken
Many people turn to air fryers as a healthier alternative to deep-frying, aiming to significantly reduce oil consumption. And while air frying certainly uses less oil, I’ve discovered a critical step for achieving the absolute best texture for your air fryer sesame chicken: a little bit of olive oil or cooking spray goes a very long way!
In my initial attempts at this recipe, I tried cooking the chicken without any oil spray, thinking the air fryer would handle it all. The result was a disappointing texture – dry, almost floury, and certainly not the crispy, juicy chicken I was aiming for. The coating was dull and not appetizing.
However, the next time, I lightly sprayed the coated chicken pieces with olive oil before placing them in the air fryer. The difference was phenomenal! The chicken emerged beautifully golden, incredibly crispy on the outside, and wonderfully tender on the inside. This small amount of oil helps the cornstarch coating crisp up and achieve that desirable fried texture. So, please, do yourself a favor and remember to spray your chicken with a little oil – it truly makes all the difference for a superior air fryer sesame chicken experience!

Naturally Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Sesame Chicken
One of the many benefits of this air fryer sesame chicken recipe is its natural suitability for various dietary needs. This recipe is inherently gluten-free, thanks to the use of cornstarch for the chicken coating. To keep it completely gluten-free, simply ensure you use a certified gluten-free soy sauce. Alternatively, you can opt for coconut aminos, which I’ll discuss in more detail below, making it an excellent choice for those avoiding soy as well.
For individuals with dairy sensitivities or those following a dairy-free diet, you’ll be happy to know that this recipe contains absolutely no dairy ingredients, meaning no substitutions or adjustments are necessary. It’s a fantastic, flavorful main course that everyone can enjoy. This dairy-free friendly aspect is also a hallmark of some of my other favorite chicken creations, such as these Paleo Chicken Meatballs and this incredibly easy Chicken Leg Quarters Recipe.

Soy-Free Option: Coconut Aminos Explained
For those avoiding soy, typically due to allergies, sensitivities, or a paleo diet, coconut aminos are a fantastic alternative to soy sauce, delivering a similar umami-rich and slightly sweet flavor. However, it’s important to note that not all brands of coconut aminos are created equal, particularly regarding consistency.
When I developed this air fryer sesame chicken recipe, I used Dynamic Health brand coconut aminos. This particular brand is noticeably thicker than other varieties I’ve encountered, which can affect the sauce’s consistency. To achieve a texture comparable to 1/2 cup of regular soy sauce or thinner coconut aminos, I found that using 1/4 cup of Dynamic Health coconut aminos mixed with 1/4 cup of water worked perfectly. This dilution helps maintain the intended sauce consistency without compromising flavor.
If you’re using a more common brand like Coconut Secret, which typically has a thinner consistency closer to soy sauce, then 1/2 cup should be the correct amount without needing to add water. Always check the consistency as you mix your sauce ingredients, and adjust with a tablespoon or two of water if it seems too thick for your preference.

Making it Paleo: Grain-Free and Delicious
Adapting this air fryer sesame chicken for a paleo diet is straightforward and equally delicious. The key adjustments involve two main components: the sauce and the chicken coating.
- **Soy Sauce Replacement:** As mentioned, you’ll need to use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce to ensure it’s soy-free and paleo-compliant. Remember to adjust the quantity or add water based on the brand’s thickness.
- **Grain-Free Flour for Coating:** For the chicken coating, you’ll replace cornstarch with a grain-free flour. I’ve had tremendous success using tapioca flour (also known as tapioca starch). It creates an incredibly crispy crust that is virtually indistinguishable from the cornstarch version. In fact, tapioca flour is my usual go-to for this recipe due to its excellent results.
I specifically tested this recipe with cornstarch, knowing it’s what most people would typically use, to confirm its effectiveness for a broader audience. And rest assured, it works beautifully! The tapioca starch version looks and tastes just as fantastic, delivering that satisfying crispiness you crave. While I haven’t personally tried them, I believe cassava flour or arrowroot powder/starch would also work well as grain-free alternatives for the coating, given their similar thickening and crisping properties.
And if you’ve already got your coconut aminos out for the chicken, consider serving this paleo-friendly air fryer sesame chicken with a side of easy bok choy. It’s a quick and healthy vegetable option that pairs wonderfully. This air fryer eggplant is another fantastic and flavorful side dish that complements the sesame chicken beautifully.
Whether you stick to the classic gluten-free version or opt for the paleo modifications, I sincerely hope you’ll fall in love with this air fryer sesame chicken recipe as much as I have!

Air Fryer Sesame Chicken
Ingredients
For the Chicken:
- 3/4 cup (90 grams) cornstarch or tapioca flour/starch for paleo
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1 (453 grams) pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into 1” cubes
- 1 large (50 grams, out of shell) egg beaten
- olive oil or cooking spray
For the Sesame Sauce:
- ½ cup (120 ml) soy sauce or coconut aminos for paleo/soy-free (use GF soy sauce for a GF version)
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
To serve:
- rice or cauliflower rice, optional
- green onions, optional
Instructions
To make the chicken:
-
Preheat the air fryer at 400 °F (205 °C) for 5 minutes. This is crucial for getting a crispy exterior right from the start.
-
Place the cornstarch (or tapioca flour for paleo) in a small bowl, ready for coating.
-
Season the chicken pieces generously by sprinkling salt and pepper over them. Use your hands to ensure every piece is evenly coated with the seasoning for maximum flavor.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk the large egg until beaten. Add the seasoned chicken pieces and toss them gently to ensure they are fully coated in the egg, which acts as a binder for the flour.
-
Carefully transfer the egg-coated chicken pieces into the bowl with the cornstarch. Toss thoroughly, making sure that each piece is completely and evenly covered with the flour mixture. This coating is key for that crispy air-fried texture.
-
Arrange the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in your preheated air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding, as this can lead to steaming instead of crisping. Cook in batches if necessary.
-
Lightly spray the chicken with olive oil using an oil mister or cooking spray. This small step is essential for achieving a golden-brown and crispy exterior.
-
Cook the chicken at 400 °F (205 °C) for 15-17 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time (around 7-8 minutes), shake the basket or flip the chicken pieces to ensure even crisping. Continue cooking until the chicken is crisp, golden, and the internal temperature reaches 165 °F (74 °C) as measured with a meat thermometer.
-
While the chicken is cooking in the air fryer, use this time efficiently to prepare the delicious sesame sauce.
To make the sauce:
-
In a small saucepan, combine all the ingredients for the sesame sauce: soy sauce (or coconut aminos), toasted sesame oil, sesame seeds, cornstarch, and lime juice. Whisk everything together until the cornstarch is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
-
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, whisking constantly. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes, or until the sauce begins to thicken slightly and becomes glossy. It should coat the back of a spoon. Be careful not to overcook, as it will continue to thicken slightly as it cools.
-
Once the chicken is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl. Pour the freshly made sesame sauce over the hot chicken. Gently toss the chicken to ensure every piece is thoroughly coated in the rich, flavorful sauce.
-
Serve your irresistible air fryer sesame chicken immediately with your choice of rice or cauliflower rice. For an extra touch of freshness and flavor, garnish with chopped green onions, if desired.
-
This air fryer sesame chicken is best enjoyed right after it’s made, when the chicken is at its crispiest and the sauce is perfectly warm and flavorful.
